Togashi is a genius. He makes you think that Gon is in fact innocent and that therefore that's the normal reaction that someone of his age should have, but that's very, VERY WRONG.
Gon, you don't just casually accept the fact that Killua comes from a family of assassins without a single care in the world. You're supposed to be minimally nervous, like Leorio, or skeptical, like Kurapika.

Actually Gon is as innocent as you can get, he takes everything at face value, in a very egocentric and black and white view. In a way he is very child like, only missing fear really.

Gon has definitely always been innocent and Togashi was never trying to make us think otherwise or Pull the rug from under us. His development and actions later in the series falls in logic with what happens when an innocent child like Gon is in a Hunter's world. Togashi is definitely a Genius because his writing doesn't follow common anime tropes.
